    Cochlear implant may work best for children who:

    • Twelve months of age or older
    • bilateral severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss – congenital or acquired
    • no or less benefit with the most powerful hearing aids
    • no medical or radiological contraindications
    • motivation and good family support

    Cochlear implants will not work for everyone. They may work for adults who:

    • 18 years or older
    • Have severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss in both ears
    • Little or no benefit from digital hearing aids
    • Post lingual onset of profound deafness
    • Have no other medical problems that would make surgery risky
