Cochlear implant may work best for children who:
- Twelve months of age or older
- bilateral severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss – congenital or acquired
- no or less benefit with the most powerful hearing aids
- no medical or radiological contraindications
- motivation and good family support
Cochlear implants will not work for everyone. They may work for adults who:
- 18 years or older
- Have severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss in both ears
- Little or no benefit from digital hearing aids
- Post lingual onset of profound deafness
- Have no other medical problems that would make surgery risky
